About our school

Staveley School is a "large" village school with approximately 154 children on role and aims to provide an education of the highest possible standard. It maintains its feel as a close and happy community yet also looks towards wider issues. Our success as a school is not an accident but the result of the dedicated work of the staff, the enthusiasm of the children, and the support of the Governors and parents.

Staveley School is a Voluntary Controlled Church of England Primary School serving the rural areas of Staveley, Crook, Kentmere and Ings.  The School was moved to its present site in 1840 after being founded in 1755. Children begin school in September at 4 years old, and transfer to Secondary after July at age 11.

The original building houses the older pupils, while a modern building erected some 30 years ago contains our youngest children.

Our 150 children are organised into six classes; 1 in Foundation stage, 2 in Key stage 1 and 3 in Key Stage 2 . All the KS2 classes are of mixed age and when the classes are organised at the start of each new school year, all decisions are based on chronological age. Every class has one full time class teacher and support from a Teaching Assistant.

We are a very happy school where children work hard, achieve high standards and enjoy their education. Relationships between all those in our school community are excellent. Staveley is a traditional village school in many ways and cultivates an atmosphere of safety, friendship and respect. We are outward looking and forward thinking and take every opportunity to look beyond our immediate environment. We place a high emphasis on collaborative working with other schools and in national initiatives and in the use of ICT at all levels within the school. Every classroom has an Interactive whiteboard and soon every other teaching space will be similarly equipped. Each classroom has it's own mini suite of computers so that they are available whenever a child or teacher needs them rather than a central suite which has to be timetabled. ICT is integrated into all areas of the curriculum and contributes to the rich education that children enjoy while with us.

Current Projects in School

March 2006

We are waiting for the contractors to arrive to begin work on the re-development of the school grounds. This programme, with phase, 1 starting in May, will provide us with an adventure trail, a covered sandpit and additional seating in the playground.

We are also continuing with our rolling programme of re-decoration. This year Class 5 will be completely 'made over' and will also benefit from the installation of a redesigned mini computer suite.

We are continuing to work hard at the development of writing across the curriculum and will shortly be introducing the revised frameworks for Maths and Literacy.

The Outdoor curriculum is also in redesign stage with Forest School expereinces for the youngest children leading through the school to the John Muir Award for the oldest.

Feb 2005

We have just been awarded funding for a Primary National Strategy Learning Network. This is a collaborative project with four local schools. Our aim is to raise further the quality of writing by children in our schools.

Our school is part of the Primary leadership programme. This scheme introduces funding to allow our senior management team to move forward with School Self Evaluation and Assessment For Learning.
