This list contains a mixture of programs that are free to download and applications that run in your web browser. All are checked and are safe to use.

J2E - Just too easy - http://www.j2e.com/ Maybe the best free app there is for school use. This simple to use application runs in a  web browser, is free to use for individuals and allows the creation of high quality and complex desktop publishing documents

Buzzword - https://buzzword.acrobat.com/#o Possibly the best looking of the online word processors. Runs in your web browser and does most of the things anyone needs to do.

ZoHo - http://www.zoho.com/ - A complete suite of Office tools, hard to think of anything you might need that isn't included here. Well worth a look.

Google Docs - http://docs.google.com - Brilliant suite of oofice applications. Includes a calendar that can be shared with friends or colleagues and best of all the documents can easily be shared allowing collaborative working.

Photoshop Express - https://www.photoshop.com/express/landing.html - Almost as good as having Photoshop on your PC. Does most of the routine editing tasks that are required for digital photographs. Also includes online storage space.

Zamzar - http://www.zamzar.com/  Throw a file format at it and Zamzar can probably convert it to the one you need. Seems to work well and can handle audio, video and even paper formats. This free utility can even convert MS Publisher documents to PDF.

Splashup - http://www.splashup.com/ Oh my word, now we even have a browser based photo editor that can handle, layers, selections, masks and all the bells and whistles that used to be associated with expensive desktop applications.There is a clever and a simplified version and it really has to be seen.

Branching Database - http://www.mape.org.uk/activities/sorting_games/index.htm Don't fancy shelling out for database software? You can achieve the required outcome by using the free games on this site. You can create your own branching database and use it to play identification games. You only get the lists included but for free it's great.

 

Software to download and install on your computer

A fully featured Office suite to download and install on as many PC's as you wish. It is free and works very well indeed. Not quite as many bells and whistles as the latest microsoft version but free. The current version 3.0 will also handle the newest Office 2007 files.

Ispring - http://www.ispringsolutions.com/ - Allows you to convert any Powerpoint presentation into a neat little flash slideshow that can be added to a school website.

Flashslideshowmaker - http://www.flash-slideshow-maker.com/ This is a tiny little application that every teacher should have. It converts those PowerPoint presentations that your pupils produce into neat little Flash slide shows that can easily be added to web pages.

Audacity-http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ - This has become the standard audio editing tool for use ins chools and well beyond. It does what you need, works well and it's free. So commonly used that it's one of the only pieces of software that is named in the National Strategies documents.

Pagebreeze http://www.pagebreeze.com/ This excellent software creates or edits web pages and websites. It works like the posh ones but for free. It is a WYSIWYG (wizzywig) editor so you don't need any code or tech stuff. If you can use a word processor, you can use this.

Google sketchup - http://sketchup.google.com/ Google again, this time a high quality 3D software tool that combines a tool-set with an intelligent drawing system. This is evn used in some architetcs as preliminary sketch tool.

Alice- http://www.alice.org/- Can't believe this one's free! A complete 3-d animation package. Produces results that look as though they have cost thousands. Not the simplest but the tutorials are good.

Pivot - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/stickfigure.html - The simplest animation can get. This delightful software allows you to produce animated stick fgures. Works really well and more interesting than writing routines to turn on traffic lights...

Picasa - http://picasa.google.com/ - Complete photo package. Carries out all the routine editing that you need and also features a full cataloguing and sharing function. Works well and with a big name behind it.

Scratch - http://scratch.mit.edu/ - a complete programming language that allows you to create stories, games and animations. A delight to use and great results.

AVG - http://free.avg.com/ - Maybe the world's best free antivirus software. Works unobtrusively in the background. Scans your computer and all incoming emails. Updates regularly and doesn't slow your system down while working.

Cute PDF - http://www.cutepdf.com/ - Superb free utility that lets you convert just about any printable document into a PDF file. Open document, slect print and choose PDF. Hey presto a PDF file is generated. Works like a dream.
