Climate Action Plan

At Staveley CE Primary School, we believe caring for God’s creation is an important part of caring for one another and for future generations. In response to the Department for Education’s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy, and the requirement for all schools to have a Climate Action Plan in place by 2025, we have developed a clear and ambitious plan to guide our work in environmental responsibility and sustainability.

Our Climate Action Plan sets out how we are taking practical, meaningful steps to reduce our environmental impact while empowering our children to be informed, hopeful and active citizens. The plan brings together our whole-school approach to sustainability and focuses on four key areas:

  • Decarbonisationreduce emissions and support students to be part of the transition to Net Zero.

We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint wherever possible. This includes improving energy efficiency, reducing waste, promoting sustainable travel, and making informed choices about resources and procurement. By taking practical steps now, we aim to lower emissions and contribute to a healthier planet for future generations.

  • Biodiversityenhance biodiversity, improve air quality and increase access to, and connection with, nature.

Our fabulous school grounds and local environment provide rich opportunities to protect and enhance nature. Through planting, habitat creation and outdoor learning, we encourage pupils to develop a love for wildlife and understand the importance of biodiversity. Caring for the natural world helps children see their role as stewards of creation.

  • Adaptation and resilienceidentify, minimise and learn about risks caused by climate change.

As the climate changes, schools must be prepared for its impacts. We are working to ensure our buildings, grounds and practices support the health, safety and wellbeing of our school community. This includes managing risks such as extreme weather while creating resilient, welcoming spaces for learning.

  • Climate education and green careersprepare pupils for a world impacted by climate change.

Learning is at the heart of our Climate Action Plan. We teach pupils about climate change in an age-appropriate, hopeful and empowering way, linking it to real-world solutions. We also help children explore future opportunities in green skills and careers, inspiring them to see how they can make a positive difference in the world.

By acting now, we are not only meeting national expectations but also living out our values, supporting our community and playing our part in building a more sustainable future for all.
